Ad creative statistics 2026: 70+ numbers, every one linked to its source
Creative drives about half of what advertising sells: 49% of incremental sales, per NCSolutions' 2023 update. Below are 70+ ad creative statistics for 2026, grouped by topic. Every number links to the report, filing or study it comes from, and conflicting figures are shown side by side instead of averaged away.
Most "ad statistics" roundups cite each other. We traced each figure to its primary source and fetched that source on October 31, 2026. Where only trade-press coverage was reachable (an earnings call, a paywalled survey), the line says so.
Key ad creative statistics
- Creative quality drives 49% of advertising's incremental sales, unchanged since 2017. (NCSolutions, 2023)
- About 5% of Meta ad creatives become winners, defined as spending at least 10x the account median and $500+. (Motion Creative Benchmarks 2026)
- Nearly 10 million advertisers used at least one of Meta's generative AI creative tools in Q3 2026. (Meta Q3 2026 earnings call, via PPC Land)
- Fully AI-generated display ads lifted click-through rates by up to 19% over ads made by human experts, and disclosing the AI cut click-through by 31.5%. (NYU Stern, 2025)
- 83% of ad executives say their company has deployed AI in the creative process, up from 60% in 2024. (IAB, 2026)
- 9:16 Reels video ads with audio had 34.5% lower cost per result than image ads on Reels, in a meta-analysis of 15 split tests. (Meta for Business)
- US internet advertising revenue reached $294.6 billion in 2025, up 13.9%. (IAB/PwC, 2026)
- Global advertising revenue is forecast to grow 8.9% in 2026 to $1.3 trillion. (WPP Media, 2026)
How much of ad performance comes from the creative
- Creative quality drives 49% of advertising's incremental sales, the largest single factor, unchanged since 2017. (NCSolutions, 2023)
- Brand factors account for 21% of incremental sales, up 6 points since 2017. (same source)
- Reach contributes 14%, down 8 points since 2017. (same source)
- Targeting drives 11% (up from 9% in 2017) and recency 5%. (same source)
- Nielsen's 2006 Project Apollo put creative's share of sales lift at 65%. (Nielsen, 2017)
- Media's contribution to sales lift rose from 15% to 36% over the 11 years Nielsen tracked. (same source)
The two creative figures, 65% in 2006 and 49% in 2017 and 2023, come from different studies and methods. Both agree on the point that matters: the ad itself is the biggest lever a marketer controls. That is also the logic behind starting from an ad that already works, which our guide to recreating winning static ads covers step by step.
Static vs video ad statistics
- On Reels, 9:16 video ads with audio and key elements in the safe zone had 34.5% lower cost per result than image ads. (Meta for Business)
- Across every vertical and format AppsFlyer measured, the top 10% of creatives capture more than 75% of spend. (AppsFlyer, October 2026)
- In gaming app ads, the top 2% of video creatives took 60.7% of video spend by Q2 2026, up from 53.5% a year earlier. (same source)
- For static images, the top 2% of gaming creatives' share of spend fell from 51.5% to 46.6% over the same year. (same source)
- The "Shop Now" call to action takes 6.4% of video spend but 67.8% of image spend in app ads. (same source)
A caveat on the AppsFlyer numbers: the dataset is 1.2 million app-marketing creatives, not DTC e-commerce, so read them as direction, not as a benchmark for a Shopify store. Our breakdown of static vs video ads covers when each format wins.
Creative testing and volume statistics
- Only about 5% of Meta ad creatives become winners (at least 10x the account median spend and $500+). (Motion Creative Benchmarks 2026)
- Motion's 2026 benchmark covers $1.29 billion in Meta ad spend across 578,750 creatives and 6,015 advertiser accounts. (same source)
- 55% of Meta ad spend goes to winning creatives, 28% to mid-range and 17% to losers. (Motion)
- Micro advertisers put about 23% of budget behind winners; enterprise advertisers put 64%. (same source)
- Roughly 6% of ads in an account capture the majority of that account's spend. (Motion)
- Advertisers test between 2.8 (micro, under $10K a month) and 18.8 (enterprise, $1M+ a month) new creatives per week. (Motion)
- Creative hit rate roughly doubles from 4.0% for micro advertisers to 8.8% for enterprise. (same source; a second page of the same report gives about 3.8% to 8.2%)
- An advertiser testing 4 ads a week surfaces about 0.2 winners a week; at 18 ads a week it is about 0.9. (Motion)
- Gaming apps spending $7M+ a quarter on user acquisition ran an average of 3,977 creative variations by Q1 2026, up 46% year over year. (AppsFlyer)
- Across gaming and non-gaming apps, the $7M+ tier averaged 3,727 creative variations per app. (same source)
- Meta says its generative AI creative tools have helped advertisers create hundreds of millions of new ads. (Engineering at Meta, October 2026)
- Since 2025, Meta's Andromeda ad-retrieval system has delivered a 2.4% increase in conversions on Facebook. (same source)
- Andromeda led to an 8% increase in ads quality; Meta built it for advertisers uploading more creatives as a diversification strategy. (Meta for Business, 2025)
The arithmetic is blunt: with a 5% hit rate, finding one winner a week takes about 20 tested ads. We worked through what that means for a small account in how many ad creatives to test. We left out the widely repeated ad-fatigue numbers ("frequency above 2.5", "28-day lifespan"): none traced back to a primary source we could fetch.

- 39% of Gen Z feel negative about AI-generated ads, nearly double the share of Millennials (20%). (same source)
- 71% of Gen Z and Millennial consumers believe they have seen an AI-created ad, up from 54% in 2024. (same source)
- 89% of advertisers who have used generative AI for ads disclose it at least sometimes. (same source)
- 73% of young consumers say knowing an ad was made with AI would increase or not change their likelihood to buy. (same source; 505 US Gen Z and Millennial consumers and 104 ad executives)
- In NIQ's neuroscience study of 2,000+ viewers, AI-generated ads, even high-quality ones, produced weaker memory activation than traditional ads. (NielsenIQ, 2024)
The AI numbers point both ways on purpose. Platform data and two field studies show AI-made ads performing; consumer sentiment, the disclosure penalty and NIQ's memory results show the risk. Our State of AI in advertising 2026 report covers the backlash cases behind these numbers, and what the evidence on AI-generated ads shows collects the campaigns.

What these numbers mean for a small advertiser
Three patterns run through the data. Creative is the largest lever a marketer controls, at roughly half of advertising's sales effect. Winning creatives are rare, about one in twenty on Meta, so volume of tested ideas decides how often you find one. And AI is now standard in production, but audiences, especially Gen Z, still punish ads that feel synthetic or carry an AI label.
For a small team, the practical answer is to test more ideas without lowering the bar on quality: start from layouts that are already proven, swap in your own product and brand, and test the angle, not the polish. The 14,000+ real ad examples in our library are sorted by industry and format for exactly that, and AdDogs rebuilds any of them with your product photo.
FAQ
What percentage of ad performance comes from the creative?
Creative quality drives 49% of advertising's incremental sales according to NCSolutions' 2023 update, the largest single factor and unchanged since 2017. Nielsen's 2006 Project Apollo put the figure at 65%. The methods differ, but both rank creative above reach, targeting and recency.
What percentage of ads become winners?
About 5% of Meta ad creatives become winners in Motion's 2026 benchmark of 578,750 creatives, where a winner spends at least 10x the account median and $500 or more. Hit rates rise with spend tier, from about 4% for accounts under $10K a month to about 9% for accounts over $1M a month.
Do AI-generated ads perform better than human-made ads?
In two field studies they did: fully AI-generated display ads lifted click-through by up to 19% (NYU Stern) and AI banners by up to 50% (IJRM). But disclosing AI cut click-through by 31.5%, NIQ found weaker memory activation for AI ads, and 39% of Gen Z feel negative about them, so results depend on execution and audience.
Are static image ads or video ads better?
It depends on placement and goal. Meta's own split tests found 9:16 video with audio cost 34.5% less per result than image ads on Reels, while AppsFlyer's app-ad data shows image ads carrying most "Shop Now" spend. Static ads are faster and cheaper to produce, which makes them the practical format for testing many angles at once.
How much is spent on digital advertising in 2026?
US internet advertising revenue reached $294.6 billion in 2025 according to IAB and PwC, and US digital video alone is projected to pass $80 billion in 2026. Globally, WPP Media forecasts advertising revenue to grow 8.9% in 2026 to $1.3 trillion.
Methodology
We searched for ad creative, advertising and AI advertising statistics published in 2023–2026, then traced each number to the organization that produced it and fetched that source on October 31, 2026. A statistic was kept only if it had a named source, a year, a specific figure, and a source page we could open. Numbers we could only find in secondary roundups were dropped, including the common "56% of auction outcomes" and "creative is 47% of sales lift" claims. Where the primary page was blocked (Meta's and Alphabet's earnings transcripts, Gartner's survey), we cite the trade publication that reported it and say so. We update this page each January.
Use these numbers: you are welcome to cite any statistic on this page; please link to the original source and, if this page helped you find it, to this page.
